(CTC I-08 Week 18) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 118
This week was full of hands-on training. We learned and became proficient in felony stop techniques, accidents investigation writing, and stress induced shooting at range. We also honor our fallen officers through a memorial service this week.
(CTC I-08 Week 17) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 119
CTC I-08 has anxiously awaited the arrival of their junior class (CTC II-08). Now the cadets have the opportunity to pass on the knowledge they have gained during the last seventeen weeks. The cadets are continuing their studies, driving training with high speed, and FST’s in Spanish. Scenarios have also begun with basic stop procedures during darkness. The transition from knowledge to practical application has marked the next stage in training.
(CTC I-08 Week 16) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 121
This was another milestone week for CTC I-08. Our class had the opportunity to experience first hand, the effects of Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray deployed to the face. We also began practicing basic stop procedures. This week also marked our transition from lower classmen to upper classmen allowing us to prepare for a new incoming class. All efforts have been made on our behalf to welcome the new class to the academy lifestyle.
“Being sprayed with OC spray was one of the most painful and valuable learning experiences at the academy so far.” (Cadet Tova)
(CTC I-08 Week 15) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 130]
Week 15 has been bittersweet for CTC I-08. Our seniors have attained the title of officer. With that comes motivation, but also the loss of friends and mentors. Next week will be the most difficult as our class tries to earn its senior status and we are the only cadets on the Academy grounds.
With our junior class enroute, we are working together so that we can provide the leadership that CTC III-07 showed us.
(CTC I-08 Week 14) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 132]
CTC I-08 has reached its halfway point at the Academy. The cadets are now able to see the arduous journey they have been taking is worth the blood, sweat and tears. Between taking over the fountain ceremony, firearms training, DUI and Field Sobriety Tests, performing Physical Methods of Arrest in Spanish, and report for grade, the cadets certainly have very little time to spare. “Despite the intensity of our training, our desire to push on increases, we survive through our teamwork.” (Cadet Intalan)
(CTC I-08 Week 13) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 134]
Watching our senior class prepare for graduation has provided our class with renewed motivation. CTC I-08 continues to remain focused on all aspects of cadet training, to possess the mentality necessary to become an officer of the finest law enforcement department in the world. A definite highlight of our current training includes performing field sobriety tests (FST’s) and reality based scenario training.
(CTC I-08 Week 12) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 135]
CTC I-08 lost one of its best cadets due to injury this week. We also lost two other cadets, one to skid pan and one for personal reasons. Just as all the pieces of the puzzle appear to be coming together it seems like we are back to square one. The work load practically doubled over night with the addition of accident investigation, range, and DUI. But, as always, our class has shown its resiliency and continues to march on.
(CTC I-08 Week 11) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 138]
CTC I-08 has been diligently practicing for weeks to take over the fountain ceremony from their seniors. Every morning and afternoon the cadets have spent precious time preparing themselves for the competition at the end of the week to see who will have the honor of performing the ceremony first. The cadets have also been continuing their firearms handling. Hours behind the muzzle have helped the cadets appreciate the skill necessary to properly and effectively use a firearm.
“Our training has transitioned to shooting, driving, and learning to arrest drunk drivers. It has become very exciting” (Cadet Mendez).
(CTC I-08 Week 10) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 140]
Week 10 was the busiest week yet for CTC I-08. This week we were introduced to the Range Staff and instructed on proper safe handling with our newly issued firearms. We also started our Accident Investigation Course along with our Driving Under the Influence Class. As our Seniors prepare to leave, we continue practicing for the Fountain Ceremony to honor or fallen Officers.
(CTC I-08 Week 9) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 140]
CTC I-08 is rolling along now. The cadet class is almost finished with vehicle placement and some cadets have finished skid pan. We learned when and why to perform a search and started to learn how. The haggard pace is about to begin with range, accident investigation and DUI classes. CTC I-08 is going to have to lean even harder on each other and become closer than ever.
(CTC I-08 Week 8) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 140]
Two months have been completed at the California Highway Patrol Academy. Classes are coming faster and increasing in difficulty. Each cadet is spending every free moment to study and prepare for the coming tests. The cadets are also learning to take over the Fountain Ceremony from the Seniors. With each step, the cadets pay their respects and honor the Officers who have given their lives in service. It is a time of tribute, and each cadet reflects on the responsibility that comes with wearing the badge.
“We are all excited for the chance to pay our respects to the fallen Officers”- Cadet Kneeland.
(CTC I-08 Week 7) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 141]
As the weeks have progressed CTC I-08 has encountered and overcome many obstacles. The completion of another week adds to our sense of accomplishment and confidence. At the end of week seven, we are still adjusting to the rigors of Cadet Training. Our curriculum now includes more of the “Hands-On” knowledge we will use as future Officers. A definite highlight of the week was learning how to safely set a proper flare pattern.
(CTC I-08 Week 6) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 142]
Six weeks into the Academy and CTC I-08 is firing on all cylinders. Everyone in the class passed the Vehicle Code test on the first attempt. Cadets are beginning Vehicle Placement with the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC). We also received our Hepatitis B shots this week. As a whole, the class grows stronger every day; we’re pushing each other to improve and dusting each other off when we fail.
(CTC I-08 Week 5) [Starting
Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets
142]
We’ve completed our fifth week at the Academy. General Law Enforcement classes have been completed and now we are delving into the specifics of the Department. Orientation for the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) was conducted this week and has us anxious for a chance behind the wheel. It has been a busy, yet fulfilling week and left each cadet excited for the coming weeks.
(CTC I-08 Week 4) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 147]
It is hard to believe that we have been here a full month. The past four weeks have taught us a lot about ourselves as individuals and as a whole. We are currently learning the basics of the Vehicle Code and the criminal justice system. One of the major highlights this month was our Physical Methods of Arrest (PMA) course. The first month went by in a flash; I hope the next five go by just as smoothly. (Cadet Silva).
(CTC I-08 Week 3) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 148]
With the end of week three upon us, CTC I-08 is still suffering the loss of cadets. Although our class has suffered a high number of resignations, it has only strengthened the resolve of those who remain. The class is getting deeper into the Vehicle Code, cracking open the Penal Code and learning the basics in Physical Methods of Arrest. Our class may have stumbled out of the gates, but we are fueled by the desire to become a CHP family.
(CTC I-08 Week 2) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 149]
Becoming a member of the Cadets of CTC I-08 have now gone through the second week at the California Highway Patrol Academy. The importance of teamwork has been stressed since day one and its significance has started to sink in. From room mates to quad mates to companies and then as a class, each cadet is shedding their individuality and putting their fellow cadets first. Several classes are now also in full swing and two are already completed. Each week will add new stress, but as a team we can accomplish everything that is asked of us.
(CTC I-08 Week 1) [Starting Cadets 167 : Remaining Cadets 155]
Becoming a member of the California Highway Patrol is a calling. This calling was answered on January 7, 2008 by 167 motivated individuals from around the state. “Pick Up Day” is one of the most memorable experiences for all cadets. These cadets soon realized the importance of teamwork through drill and various classroom exercises. The 27 weeklong journey has only begun. “The Academy is everything I expected and more.” (Cadet Silva)
