Cadet Class I-09

(CTC I-09 Week 27)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 183

With week 27, CTC I-09 comes to a close. It has been a trying and rewarding 6 months. To the Academy Staff, we thank you for your dedication to our training and for making the California Highway Patrol Academy what it is, the best law enforcement academy in the world. To our families and friends, we thank you for your love and support as you sacrificed along with us throughout this journey.
Now as new officers, we leave this facility to embark on the second phase of our training at our assigned area offices. We are proud to represent the blue and gold and dedicated to doing so with integrity and honor.

(CTC I-09 Week 26)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 183

As CTC I-09 comes to the end of our training, our instructors are preparing us for the transition from the paramilitary life of the California Highway Patrol Academy to life on the road in our communities. We were able to serve the community by performing a number of service projects that benefited the people of Sacramento. One of the projects was to help Habitat for Humanity build a fence at new homes being built to benefit the single mothers in the community; tearing down the old fence, building the new fence, and filling a ditch turned into an all day event. One day of service provided years of security and privacy for those who will be helped through Habitat for Humanity. Another group from our class helped paint the inside and outside of the Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center which provides assistance and classes for homeless families and individuals in the city.
The group effort of 183 individuals made a positive change in the community. It is our hope that our individual efforts in our assigned communities will make a significant difference throughout the State.

"Life at the Academy has started to change for CTC I-09 as the focus of our training has shifted solely to field training preparation and life saving techniques. It has been exciting for us to finally be learning what brought many of us to this career and to have the ability to save a life. We also had the opportunity as a class to become potential bone marrow donors, by taking a few cheek swabs and being added to the national marrow donor program. Our graduation is only in two short weeks and we anxiously await to serve the public, and use our new EMR skills to begin saving lives."

(CTC I-09 Week 24)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 184

On Saturday, July 11, 2009, we all had the opportunity to go out on a shift ride along in our assigned area office. We returned to the Academy the following Monday with stories to share and a sober respect for our new found career we are ready to embark upon. Week 24 has brought DUI and Spanish training to a close. We also completed our eight hour collision investigation exam. This busy week has brought us one step closer to our dreams of wearing the tan and gold.
(Cadet John P. Ambler, CTC I-09, Company A, DJH)

(CTC I-09 Week 23)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 188]

CTC I-09 continues to practice our graduation ceremony daily in preparation for that motivating day. As we continue to complete our training, graduation is much more realistic for our class. We have been utilizing most of our time inside the classrooms learning Spanish, Accident Investigation, and many other Learning Domains. Our entire class is very excited about our upcoming Ride Along weekend where we will meet our future beat partners and actually drive around our newly assigned areas. We look forward to the opportunity of using our training from the Academy and applying it to the real world of the road! We remain steadfast in our devotion to duty!
(Cadet Bradley S. Larson, CTC I-09, Company B, RAS)

(CTC I-09 Week 22)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 190]

CTC I-09 started out the week with taser training which is an excellent less lethal defense option. Our hands-on training with the taser will no doubt be beneficial to our career with the California Highway Patrol. Experiencing the taser training together as companies has further strengthened our spirits and camaraderie. We continue to train with our firearms under low light and no light situations which is proving to be a valuable experience.

As graduation quickly approaches, CTC I-09 continues to train hard in the classroom as well as in the gym with the PT Staff. The EVOC Staff remains determined to perfect and solidify our driving skills. The more we train, the more we look forward to being out on the road. With the right mind set, CTC I-09 will finish strong.
(Cadet Karl Witte, Company C CTC I-09)

(CTC I-09 Week 21)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 192]

Week 21 marks the beginning of scenario training for CTC I-09. With simulated criminal activity, we have the opportunity to put all of our training into practice while in a controlled environment. While photos and the details of these activities are considered to be agency sensitive, it can be stated that the training that we are getting in this area is paramount to our preparation for the road.
These are trying and exciting times here at the academy and in a mere six weeks, graduation day will come.
(Cadet John Ambler, Company A CTC I-09)

(CTC I-09 Week 20)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 192]

It was another busy week for CTC I-09. We began night shooting, training with the ASP, Code 3 driving with the Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (EVOC) staff and practicing for graduation. The class of CTC I-09 was busy this week practicing for our upcoming scenarios. We had our second uniform inspection this week which motivated our class to continue to press on. We continue to never quit and always fight as graduation is only seven weeks away.
(Cadet Watkins, Chad CTC I-09, Co. C)

(CTC I-09 Week 19)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 199]

CTC I-09 continues to put the extensive training that we have received during the last 19 weeks to the test. Everyday at the Academy is one day closer to receiving the badge. This week, we had our Felony Stop Scenario Testing, our Advanced Physical Methods of Arrest Training, and we had the opportunity to spar with our fellow Cadets. We also were able to experience first hand, the affects of CS gas. Academy Training is continually becoming faster paced. CTC I-09 is excited to defeat any challenge that comes before us!
(Cadet Larson, Bradley CTC I-09, Co. B)

(CTC I-09 Week 18)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 203]

This week was exciting as we welcomed our junior class to the Academy and continued in our scenarios training. The Enforcement Tactics Team has been challenging us to work and practice hard in preparation for scenario testing. Our final phase of training has begun and we must work harder than ever. We will succeed!
(California Highway Patrol Cadet John Ambler, CTC I-09, A Company )

(CTC I-09 Week 17)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 203]

Our training has shifted from classroom academics to real-life scenarios. We are learning the tactics and procedures for completing the Basic Traffic Enforcement Stop, the foundation of what we will do more than anything else on the road. Even though it is called the “Basic Stop”, we have learned it is much more detailed and complex than the name would leave one to believe. We are learning the techniques that will keep us safe and tactically in the most advantageous position.

The realistic training here called upon us to feel the effects of Oleoresin Capsicum Spray (Pepper-Spray). It was a very memorable experience that we will remember for the rest of our lives. We learned first hand that our OC Spray has the ability to incapacitate anyone it comes in contact with.

We qualified at the range with our duty weapon, the Remington 870 Police Shotgun, and the AR-15 Rifle. It was motivating to put all of our weapons training into use and certify in their use.

We continue to get motivated through our successes and the new and exciting training afforded to us by the State of California.
(Cadet Karl Witte, CTC I-09 Company C)

(CTC I-09 Week 16)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 204]

Seeing our seniors graduate last week was very motivating for CTC I-09. This week, we are preparing ourselves to become seniors. The Academy Staff has been able to direct their complete attention to us and are doing all that they can to prepare us to be excellent examples to our incoming junior class. This week, we learned and started to practice basic traffic stops, and how to handle civil disturbances. We continued with firearms training and will put our linguistic skills to the test as we begin practicing our arrest techniques in Spanish.
As a class, we are motivated to press forward and we are excited for the future.
(Cadet Bradley S. Larson, Company B CTC I-09)

(CTC I-09 Week 15)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 206]

It has been an exciting week for CTC I-09,as we say good-bye to our graduating seniors. We wish them "God speed" as they hit the road as Officers.
This week we completed our report for grade exam, and we began practicing our arrest techniques in Spanish. We will continue to work hard and focus on our goal, then on August 7th, we too will cross the finish line.
(Cadet John P. Ambler, Company A CTC I-09)

(CTC I-09 Week 14)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 208]

Our training continues to prepare us for the real life situations on the road. Our enforcement tactics training is bringing all our other course work together. The Range Staff continues to train us in practical applications for on the job situations. The Senior Cadet Class is getting ready to graduate and the staff is preparing us to take their place. CTC I-09 was fortunate to participate in a memorial service in tribute to all fallen Officers. It is a reminder to all of the great responsibility this career holds. With fourteen weeks down, we steadily press forward toward our goal.
(Cadet Witte, Karl, Company C, CTC I-09, California Highway Patrol Cadet)

(CTC I-09 Week 13)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 208]

CTC I-09 is excited to have reached what we consider to be the half-way point in our training at the Academy. The week, we continued our weapons training and were introduced to two new weapon systems; The Remington 870 Shotgun, and the Colt AR-15 rifle. We also had a unique opportunity to assist in the training of the horses in the mounted division of the California Highway Patrol. The academics have accelerated to an even faster pace with new classes being introduced on a weekly basis; we remain excited and ready for what is to come.
(Cadet Larson, Bradley, Company B, CTC I-09, California Highway Patrol Cadet)

(CTC I-09 Week 11)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 219]

CAs training continues at the academy, CTC I-09 continues to receive more responsibilities. Our senior class (CTC IV-08) prepares for graduation and it is motivating to see these cadets so close to becoming officers. CTC I-09 has relieved them of their daily flag duties. The flag detail shows respect and attention to detail while raising and lowering the flags. As a class we stay motivated with each class completed. With 11 weeks of academy training completed, we are focused more than ever on our goal of preparing for the road. The paramilitary environment has become routine. Our physical training continues to strengthen us. We received our duty weapons this week and look forward to live fire on the range. Class CTC I-09 continues to press forward with hard work and dedication.
(Cadet Witte CTC I-09 )

(CTC I-09 Week 10)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 219]

CTC I-09 finally reached double digits as week 10 of our training has been completed. With our increasing experience, comes increasing responsibilities. We have recently assumed the responsibilities of polishing the brass throughout the academy grounds, and we are training daily to eventually perform the Fountain Ceremony. The Fountain Ceremony is our way to honor and pay respect to all of the fallen CHP officers by polishing their brass nameplates weekly. We continue forward this week with our studies. Nightly we are studying for our many exams, and we are making steady progress in our DUI, accident investigation, and Spanish courses. CTC I-09 has had a great week and we are excited for what is yet to come.
(Cadet Larson CTC I-09 )

(CTC I-09 Week 9)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 219]

With week nine completed, CTC I-09 is one third of the way through our training. This gives us all a true sense of accomplishment and motivation to persevere. This week we started practicing fountain ceremony and the flag detail. We have started our Spanish language training and our DUI investigation. Our PMA instructors make handcuffing look easy, but they encourage us that practice makes perfect. We have nine victories in the bank and eighteen to go. We will continue the charge.
(Cadet Ambler, John, Company A, CTC I-09, California Highway Patrol Cadet.)

(CTC I-09 Week 8)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 219]

This week our senior class taught us how to properly perform the fountain ceremony. To perform the fountain ceremony is a great honor for a California Highway Patrol Cadet. The ceremony is to remember and honor the 214 fallen California Highway Patrol Officers. Our thoughts also go out to the families and loved ones of the recently fallen Oakland P.D. Officers. CTC I-09 continues to build a firm foundation for our future careers with the California Highway Patrol, with the beginning of Driving Under the Influence and Collision Investigation courses. Each Cadet has their own challenges to face, but as a class we can overcome them. Motivation and dedication are tools used by all cadets. With each week we overcome weaknesses and strengthen ourselves for more challenges
(Cadet Karl W. Witte, Company C CTC I-09)

(CTC I-09 Week 7)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 221]

This week CTC I-09 continued to practice drill in preparation for the upcoming drill competition next week. Each company is becoming more united as we work towards common challenges and future victories. Although we are divided as a class competitively in drill, we are united in our education here at the Academy which has been a challenge for the entire class this week. However with every challenging week completed comes great satisfaction and another victory for CTC I-09.
(Cadet John P. Ambler, CTC I-09, Co. A)

(CTC I-09 Week 6)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 221]

With six weeks down and 21 to go, the journey ahead is long, but the starting line is well behind us. Therefore, we continue to charge forward and focus on our final goal to become Officers of the California Highway Patrol. From physical training to vehicle codes, the Academy Staff continues to challenge us to work hard and master the skills we will need to be safe and productive out on the road. We are motivated by the outstanding training and look forward to putting in into practice. Graduation day will come and we will be ready.
(Cadet John P. Ambler, CTC I-09, Co. A)

(CTC I-09 Week 5)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 221]

With five weeks behind us, CTC I-09 is coming together as a class. We find ways to strengthen each other as we work toward the same goal, to graduate with honor. The Physical Training Staff continues to find ways to challenge us both physically and mentally. We have been introduced to the basics of E.V.O.C and look forward to more driving. With classes in full swing, we look at each test as a victory. We continue to dig deep into the vehicle codes that build a sure foundation for our career. We are enjoying all the hands on training that gives us a real life feeling of what to expect on the road. We look forward to the upcoming weeks with anticipation.
(Cadet Witt, Karl CTC I-09, Co. C)

(CTC I-09 Week 4)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 224]

It has been said that our Academy journey is a 27 week long campaign, and that with each successfully completed week comes another victory. This week CTC I-09 not only celebrates another victory, but also takes its first large step forward in the campaign with the completion of our first month of training. This week our class learned how to properly complete a traffic citation, and it can now be marked as the week that we had our first of many attempts at writing them. We also continued learning our side handle baton techniques, and the physical training Staff consistently pushes our bodies to new limits. Every part of our training continues to instill a heightened sense of attention to detail. Marching in formation and keeping our boots and brass polished are the minor things on attention to detail that will keep us focused and to be safe in our future careers in the California Highway Patrol.
(Cadet Larson, Bradley CTC I-09, Co. B)

(CTC I-09 Week 3)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 226]

As we completed week three, we began to feel familiar with our new home. The Academy grounds are beautiful and well maintained. You do not have to be here long to see that the California Highway Patrol is an organization that takes pride in all that it does. We are all very proud to be entering into this family.
This week we continued our studies on Vehicle Code and Criminal Law. We also began to practice self-defense and even had the opportunity to meet the EVOC staff. This week has tested our will, but we continue to persevere.
(Cadet Ambler, CTC I-09, Co. A)

(CTC I-09 Week 2)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 227]

With the challenges of week one passing, CTC I-09 charges into week two. The sun rises early, and CTC I-09 is always up to meet it. Motivated Cadets found inspiration in Physical Fitness and our Physical Methods of Arrest class which is challenging. The Academics here at the Academy are also challenging. The pace is fast, but our instructors ensure no Cadet gets left behind. Perhaps the most obvious change in CTC I-09 is the Cadets themselves. The fraternal bonds that all Cadets share only serves to strengthen our collective spirits during our Academy Training. This is reflected in our class motto, “Never quit, always fight.”
(Cadet Sanders, I-09, Co. C)

(CTC I-09 Week 1)
[Starting Cadets 237 : Remaining Cadets 233]

CTC I-09 had the honor of passing through the Academy gates this week. Our 27 week long journey has begun. The Staff Officers and PT Staff introduced us to the paramilitary lifestyles and the challenges we will face for our future training. With the advice and motivation from our senior Cadet Class, CTC IV-08, we feel confident that our training here will be a success.
(Cadet Witte, I-09, Co. C)
