In May of 2005, the California Highway Patrol established Field Support Section, which combined the duties previously handled by the now-closed Investigative Services and Field Services Sections. Field Support Section staff oversee an array of complex programs associated with vehicle theft, criminal intelligence, and druge trafficking/interdiction. These include:
- K-9 Training
Oversees and coordinates canine selection and training for the Department. Many of our canines are received from animal shelters, which reduces the CHP's costs and spares the lives of these animals.
- Vehicle Theft
Coordinates and oversees programs and task forces related to vehicle theft and its prevention, as well as criminal investigative issues. The unit gathers, analyzes and disseminates data, provides training, develops prevention tactics, and provides assistance to CHP officers statewide, as well as allied agencies.
- Drug Enforcement
Coordinates and oversee the Department's narcotics detection efforts. Officers throughout the state, assigned to routine patrol and multi-agency Drug Task Forces, are involved in the seizure of record amounts of narcotics and assets from criminals involved in narcotics trafficking.
- Tax Seizure
Oversees the tax seizure warrant service program, and provides assistance to allied law enforcement and other state agencies upon request. Trained tax seizure officers in numerous locations around the state assist the various state agencies in their efforts to recover unpaid taxes.
- Collision Investigation
The unit is responsible for coordinating accident investigation training and maintaining the Collision Investigations Manual.
- Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT)
The eight CHP MAITs conduct in-depth investigations of complex accidents which require a high level of training and specialized accident reconstruction skills.
- Safety Services Program
Oversees and coordinates the Site Vulnerability Assessment program, Critical Incident Investigations, Crime Prevention and Emergency Preparedness Program to include Emergency Action Plans, Workplace Violence Prevention training (provided to state agencies upon request), Crime Incident Reporting System, Master Service Agreement for the statewide unarmed security contract, and the Headquarters Security System.
