DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE ENFORCEMENT AND EDUCATION
The California Highway Patrol’s Golden Gate Division, Areas are responsible for conducting DUI Task
Force operations, Proactive roving DUI patrol, DUI traffic safety presentations and Designated Driver
Program (DDP) Presentations. Golden Gate Divisions goals are to address DUI traffic related concerns.
DUI Task Force operations, DUI enforcement patrol, DUI traffic safety presentations and Designated
Driver Program (DDP) Presentations are conducted throughout the Bay Area. Golden Gate Division will
have the following operations for 2009-2010:
14 DUI SOBRIETY/DRIVER LICENSE CHECKPOINT OPERATIONS
The California Highway Patrol, Golden Gate Division, Areas will conduct 14 Driving Under the
Influence/Driver License Checkpoints in the Bay Area throughout 2009 and 2010. Each year,
motorists are needlessly maimed or killed on our roads by those who drive under the influence.
The goal of the Driving Under the Influence/Driver License Checkpoints is to ensure the safe
passage of each and every motorist by targeting roads where there is a high frequency of drunk
driving. Sobriety checkpoints are an effective tool for achieving this goal and are designed to
augment existing patrol operations. By publicizing these efforts, the Highway Patrol believes
motorists can be deterred from drinking and driving, or driving without a valid license.
Traffic volume permitting, all vehicles will be checked and drivers who are under the influence
of alcohol and/or drugs can expect to be arrested. Those motorists without a valid driver
license can expect to receive a citation and have their vehicle impounded. Checkpoints will
normally be conducted between the hours of 1800 and 0200. The media may contact the
Golden Gate Traffic Management Center at (510) 286-6923, after 1500 hours on the dates of the
checkpoints, for the exact location.
DUI TRAFFIC SAFETY/DESIGNATED DRIVER PROGRAM (DDP) PRESENTATIONS
Golden Gate Division will also conduct a minimum of 2- DUI safety/Designated driver presentations.
The presentations will consist of public awareness and education on the risks and dangers of
operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
DUI TASK FORCE OPERATIONS
Golden Gate Division will complete a total of 10 DUI Task Force Operations during the operational
phase of 2009-2010, with every Area office conducting operations. The operations are designed to
augment existing patrol operations on the roadways to focus their efforts on intoxicated drivers,
ensuring the safe passage of each and every motorist by targeting roads where there is a high
frequency of drunk driving. Task Force Operations will be held on prescheduled dates and times
with the ultimate goal of preventing drunk driving and drunk driving related traffic collisions.
STATEWIDE STREET RACING AND ENFORCEMENT
The California Highway Patrol was awarded a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to train
and equip California Highway Patrol Officers. The purpose of the POST Street Racing and Modified
Vehicle Enforcement Training is to provide background information and enforcement tools to assist
field personnel with combating side shows and activities associated with Illegal Street racing in
order to ensure safe roadways. Street racing task forces were held throughout the Bay Area during
2008-2009. Although the grant funding has ended, the enforcement efforts training to combat illegal
Street Racing activities will continue.
