The California Highway Patrol is dedicated to ensuring that all children are properly secured in child safety seats. To assist the public, we provide child seat installation at our office. The service is free, but must be pre-scheduled. Please contact us at (408) 467-5400 to set up an appointment.
Vehicles frequently need to have their ID numbers verified for a variety of reasons as determined by the Department of Motor Vehicles. These inspections fall into two categories: Verifications and ID number Assignments. (paperwork from DMV will indicate which inspection you need)
Verifications: No appointment required. Bring the paperwork and vehicle to our station during normal working hours. (See below)
Assignments: Please call (408) 467-5400 for an appointment. Appointments can only be made after you obtain a REG 124 form from DMV. The REG 124 form MUST be brought to the appointment. A valid California Drivers License is required at the time of the VIN appointment. The vehicle needs to be running and completely assembled with all required lighting and safety equipment.
If the vehicle is a Special Construction Vehicle (SPCNS), you will need to bring the following to the appointment:
Manufacturers State of Origin (MSO) for frames, engine and transmission.
Receipts for any of the above components.
SPCNS trailers that are 4,000 lbs or less have their ID numbers assigned at DMV. CHP will ONLY assign ID numbers to trailers which weigh 4,001 lbs or more.
The San Jose Area CHP station is open Monday-Friday, 8 am - 5 pm. (Closed on major holidays).

You can obtain a copy of your traffic collision report at our office or by mail. We make every attempt to have your report completed in eight working days. There is a $10 charge for the report. If you are requesting a copy of the report by mail, include the following: Your full name, mailing address, Date/time of the collision, telephone number AND a check or money order made out to California Highway Patrol in the amount of $10.

If you require information regarding other involved parties prior to the completion of the report, it will be available at our office on the first working day after the collision. There is no charge for this information.
If you are an involved party to a collision and disagree with any portion of the report, you may write what is referred to as a "supplemental". In your written supplemental, please include the following:
The report number.
The specific item or items you disagree with.
You will receive a response by mail regarding the outcome.
It is not recommended that you attempt to contact the investigating officer directly by telephone or e-mail in these matters as it eliminates our ability to track such concerns.

While there are many reasons that a vehicle may be towed by the CHP, all generally fall into one of two categories: "Stored" or "Impounded"
Stored vehicles can be retrieved directly from the tow company without having to come to our office first. Some examples of "stored" vehicles are:
Vehicle involved in a collision and unable to be driven, a vehicle left parked on a freeway in excess of four hours, a vehicle blocking a lane.
Impounded vehicles require a release from this office prior to attempting to retrieve the vehicle from the tow company.
Some common examples of "impounded" vehicles:
A vehicle towed because the driver does not have a valid license (held for 30 days).
A vehicle towed as part of an investigation where further examination in necessary.
