Valley Division is the gateway to the Gold Rush country and the guardian of Interstate 80, the trans-Sierra highway. The Division's Truckee, Gold Run and Auburn Area offices are responsible for keeping the "Nation's Lifeline" open in winter so travelers and supplies continue to flow between the east and west coasts.
Valley Division oversees four major highways - Interstate 80, Interstate 5, US 50, and State Route 99 - in addition to thousands of miles of state and county roads. The geography includes fertile valley farmlands; metropolitan Sacramento, home to an expanding high-tech industry; and the Sierra, where commercial and recreational traffic vies for roadway space. The Sacramento and American rivers intersect within the Division's boundaries.
Valley Division manages numerous specialized units benefiting California's motoring public, including the Air Operations Unit (consisting of two helicopters and two fixed wing aircraft) assigned to congestion relief and speed enforcement, the Commercial Unit assigned to commercial vehicle and regulation enforcement, the Investigative Services Unit assigned to vehicle theft reduction and recovery operations, the Specially Marked Patrol Vehicle (SMPV) team targeting traffic problem areas and issues, and the 877-CHP-1929 traffic complaint hotline program.
Through the efforts of all Valley Division personnel, the following traffic safety achievements were realized in 2006, improving upon an already successful 2005:
- 12% reduction in fatal collisions
- 7% reduction in injury collisions
- 8% reduction in unbelted fatal victims
- 10% reduction in truck-at-fault injury collisions
- 8% reduction in truck-at-fault property damage only collisions
- 8% increase in DUI arrests
We encourage you to visit the many links to Valley Division programs and information. As part of our ongoing mission to provide the highest levels of safety, service, and security, we strive to develop and employ innovative and effective programs to the benefit of the people we serve, the people of California.
