Field Support Section: Accident Investigation Unit
The Accident Investigation Unit (AIU) was established March 1, 1999, in the Enforcement Services Division, Field Services Section. The unit is the result of combining three programs: Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) Liaison; Accident Investigation (AI) Training; and Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT). The AIU will continue to develop this site as a means to provide service in answering frequently asked questions, on-line publications, training information and more.
The unit is responsible for providing advice on coding issues; revising the Collision Investigation Manual, HPM 40.50, and the Traffic Collision Report (CHP 555). We are assisting in the development of the California Automated Reporting System; training in the use of the Truck/Bus Collision Supplemental Report (CHP 555D); and assisting in all phases of AI training beginning with Techniques of AI I and II; and Traffic Accident Reconstruction I and II (MAIT). The unit also conducts training in officer involved shooting investigations.
