Lieutenant Ernie Sanchez

Careers to Watch

Lieut. SanchezLieutenant Ernie Sanchez

by Sergeant Angela Ditzenberger

Lieutenant Ernie Sanchez is definitely one to watch. Upon first glance at him, you would imagine Ernie is fresh out of the Academy, but don't let his youthful appearance fool you. In his 10 years on the department, he has managed to promote twice, and has made great ties in the Hispanic community with his work on the CHP El Protector Program.

Ernie was born in East Los Angeles, CA and graduated from Calexico High School in 1987. Just two weeks later, he found himself attending Brigham Young University (BYU). Sanchez had to make many adjustments, including working several jobs to get through school. He never lost sight of his goals and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1990. When deciding on a career after college, he reflected on an old childhood memory... "My father was employed by the local school district as a school bus driver. In his interactions with the CHP (license testing procedures, and other related training), he had nothing but glowing remarks about the officers he dealt with. Like my father, I developed a strong admiration for the Department at a young age."

Lieut. Sanchez and bicycleErnie became an officer in 1991 and was sent to Ventura. In 1994, he transferred to Golden Gate Division in Vallejo and earned a position as the El Protector coordinator. He became very well-known around the Bay Area, and spoke on behalf of the Department in media interviews and public speaking engagements. From that position, he promoted to Sergeant and moved to South Los Angeles, one of several moves in his career thus far. He says, "Every move I've made has been voluntary. Each of my three children was born in different cities around the state, and I wouldn't have had it any other way."

Ernie made another move to Sacramento in August of 2000. He promoted to lieutenant on December 1, 2000 and worked at the Academy in West Sacramento. He now works as a lieutenant in Santa Fe Springs. Ernie is an avid cyclist, and will tell you it's a passion that helps keep him in excellent shape. He says, "It's great to work for an organization that promotes healthy lifestyles."
