The primary mission of the California Highway Patrol is to "provide the highest level of safety, service, and security to the people of California." As a statewide criminal justice agency, the CHP also provides law enforcement assistance to local governments and allied agencies when situations exceed the limits of local resources. The CHP is responsible for providing security and protective services to elected state officials, state government employees, and state facilities.
The Santa Ana Area is a fully engaged law enforcement entity located in one of the most dynamic areas in California. We are a dedicated and enthusiastic Area that focuses our efforts toward public education campaigns and enforcement of all traffic laws. Santa Ana is considered by many to be “The Heart of Orange County”. The Santa Ana Area is responsible for patrolling over 225 miles of freeway including Interstate 5, 405 and State Route 55, 22, and 91. Along with the expansive freeway system, the Area is responsible for 220 miles of unincorporated roadways. The Area is also home to the “Orange Crush” with an average of 540,000 vehicles a day traveling through this transition of the I-5, SR-22 and SR-57.
