The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Modesto Area office is responsible for patrolling of all the freeways, state routes, roadways, and unincorporated areas within Stanislaus County. Geographically, Stanislaus County covers 1,521 square miles and has a population of approximately 552,999.  Stanislaus County has an estimated 525,565 registered vehicles.  Over the years, Stanislaus County continues to grow with people and businesses relocating to the Central Valley.  

State Route 99 and Interstate 5 are both heavily traveled routes in Stanislaus County.   Motorists also travel along seven additional state routes, including State Route 4, State Route 33, State Route 108, State Route 120, State Route 132, State Route 165, and State Route 219.  State Route 132 through Stanislaus County is known to have some of the most dangerous stretches of two-lane highways in the state.

As the commander of the CHP Modesto Area, I take seriously our responsibility to serve everyone with the upmost respect and professionalism.  The officers you see working are highly trained, experienced professionals, who do all within their power to ensure your safety and to protect our communities.  We want to be responsive to your needs and ensure your wellbeing, whether you are traveling the roadways in your own neighborhood, county roads, state routes, and freeways that traverse Stanislaus County.

• Stanislaus County Fair attracts thousands of visitors to the annual event which usually occurs in July.    
• Modesto is known for the birth of the American Graffiti Festival which attracts thousands of people locally and visitors from across the state to showcase their classic vehicles. 
• Stanislaus County has a few reservoirs and rivers providing great opportunities for fishing and water recreation, such as: Woodward Reservoir, Modesto Reservoir, and Knights Ferry Rafting along the Stanislaus River.

CHP Programs

The Modesto Area offers the services and programs listed below; we welcome you to contact the office for more information:


• Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) inspections
• Child safety seat inspections and installations
• Senior Volunteer Program

• Explorer Program (Ages between 15 years and 21 years old)

 

CHP Traffic Safety Educational Programs

The Modesto Area offers a variety of traffic safety educational:


• The CHP’s Start Smart program is aimed at helping newly licensed and future teenage drivers understand the critical responsibilities of driving and understand that while accidents do happen, crashes are 100 % preventable. 

• The CHP’s Age Well Drive Smart program is geared to towards reducing crashes and pedestrian deaths and injuries by older Californians and to increase seniors’ alternate transportation options when driving is no longer an option.

• The “Every 15 Minutes” program is aimed to prevent underage drinking with the goal of reducing crashes and fatalities working with the partnerships of local law enforcement, educators, firefighters, community hospitals, emergency medical responders, chaplains, counselors, the judiciary, community groups, local businesses, and parents.
