Drug Recognition Evaluator Program

Welcome to the Drug Evaluation and Classification Program (DECP)

 

​The California Highway Patrol is the State Coordinator of all DECP training for the State of California.  These training courses include: Drug Recognition Expert (DRE), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE), Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) and Drug Impairment Training for Educational Professionals (DITEP).  The courses are facilitate through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

How do I sign up for a Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE) class?How do I sign up for a Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE) class?<p>​​Prospective students shall submit a signed training request form (click on the <em>Resources</em> link in the menu on the right) along with copies of their SFST and ARIDE certificates electronically to the course coordinator. This is the only way to obtain a roster slot. A name and POST number will not suffice.</p>

We handle a high volume of class registrations and requests from numerous agencies, therefore your paperwork may not be processed immediately. Is there a dress code for Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE) school?Is there a dress code for Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE) school?<p>​​There is a strict dress code which shall be followed while attending DRE classroom courses. Students are required to wear collared shirts and slacks or khaki style pants. Female students may wear conservative dresses or skirts if preferred, however, this course requires some practical exercises. Jeans and hats are not allowed at any time during the classroom course.</p>

May I contact IACP directly with any issues?<p>​Because the CHP is the California State Coordinator of the Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE) program, all inquiries and issues should be directed to the Drug Evaluation and Classification Program (DECP) unit. Please do not contact the IACP with any issues. The IACP administers this program in 50 states and several countries, and it would create unnecessary work for them to handle inquiries from individuals. The CHP will address any inquiries or issues with the IACP when necessary.</p>

Both are required in order to certify as a DRE.</p>
