Officer Miguel A. Cano

At approximately 12:30 a.m., on July 2, 2025, CHP West Los Angeles Area Officer Miguel A. Cano suffered a suspected medical emergency while on duty.  Officer Cano was transporting a detainee to the CHP West Los Angeles Area office with his partner when he lost consciousness and subsequently lost control of the patrol vehicle he was driving, which left the roadway and collided with a tree.  First responders from the Culver City Fire Department were on the scene within minutes to provide immediate medical attention.  Officer Cano’s partner and the person in custody suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash.  Officer Cano was transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center where, despite the lifesaving efforts of emergency personnel, he was pronounced deceased.  Officer Cano was 34 years old and had been a member of the CHP for two years and eight months.  Officer Cano is survived by his wife, Melissa; his parents, Tino and Lupe; and his sister, Erica.
