Minimum Requirements - Explorer

Eligibility


Explorer applicants must meet the following Requirements: 

  • Be between the ages of 15-21                                
  • No drug or alcohol use                                                                    
  • Have no felony arrests or convictions                
  • Be in good standing with their school, work, and family​

Organizational Values and Conduct


Members of the CHP Explorer Program represent the Department and are held accountable for the following departmental organizational values:

  • Respect for others

  • Fairness

  • Ethical practices

  • Equitable treatment for all

CHP Explorers shall maintain a professional image while performing their duties, and shall not act, either privately, or officially, in such a manner as to bring discredit upon the Department or fellow Explorers. CHP Explorers are expected to support fellow Explorers in the performance of their duties and shall always conduct themselves in a calm, courteous, professional, and respectful manner in order to establish and maintain the highest standards of integrity, courage, dedication, loyalty, and respect.

Selection Standards


Applicants interested in the Explorer Program must meet the following standards:

  • Complete and submit a CHP 400F, Explorer Application

  • Complete and submit a CHP 400P, Confidential Personal History Statement, with detailed background information for specified time periods. This form is used to assess an applicant's qualifications before and during the interview

  • Successfully complete a Qualifications Appraisal Panel interview to assess the applicants ability to assume the responsibilities and obligations of an Explorer

  • Successfully complete a background investigation to ensure applicants meet the quality and character standards required by the CHP

  • Complete a medical evaluation conducted by a licensed physician
