Motor Carrier Safety Unit

The Motor Carrier Safety Unit's primary function is to conduct safety inspections of commercial vehicle operators within the nine Bay Area counties. These inspections are conducted off-highway at terminal locations where the operators regularly garage and maintain their vehicles.

​The objectives of the Motor Carrier Safety Operations Program are the prevention of collisions and injuries attributed to vehicle mechanical defects, excessive driving hours, or misuse of controlled substances or alcohol by drivers; and the prevention of incidents and catastrophes during, or as a result of, hazardous material transportation.

The Motor Carrier Safety Unit also issues California Carrier Numbers (CA number) for those commercial vehicle operators within the nine Bay Area counties. When applying for a CA number, allow for ten working days after the Unit receives the application to issue a number.

​The Motor Carrier Safety Unit is responsible for conducting inspections of the following:

  • ​School Bus Inspection and Certification

  • Youth Bus and School Pupil Activity Bus Inspection and Certification

  • Truck Terminal Inspections for those subject to the Biennial

  • Inspection of Terminals ( BIT ) Program

  • Tour Bus Inspections

  • Transit and Church Bus Inspections

  • Farm Labor Vehicle Inspections

  • ​Cargo Tank Inspections

  • Hazardous Material and Hazardous Waste Hauler Inspections

  • Inspections of Commercial Vehicles Involved in Traffic Collisions

  • Complaints Against Operators for Unsafe Practices

  • Controlled Substances and Alcohol Testing Program Inspections
