Public Information Unit

The Public Information Unit (PIU) coordinates CHP - Golden Gate Division's media relations, community outreach, and recruitment activities for the 9 counties that comprise the San Francisco Bay Area.

Our goal is to make transparent the operations of the California Highway Patrol in order to further our mission of providing the highest level of Safety, Service and Security to the Bay Area. We provide information and education, in cooperation with our newspaper, magazine, radio and television media partnerships. We also operate several social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube to allow us to interact directly with the public.

"Community engagement is the essence of what we do..."

The San Francisco Bay Area is made up of amazing and diverse people and we are honored to live and work in this beautiful region of California. We feel compelled to be actively involved in our communities and you will find us ever-present in your neighborhoods, at schools, various safety events, and local fairs. To find safety events and classes being conducted throughout the San Francisco Bay Area by the CHP, join us at CHP-BayArea.Eventbrite.com.

The Golden Gate Division Public Information Unit is comprised of a Supervisor (Sergeant Raul Gonzalez), Public Information Officer (Officer John Fransen), Community Outreach Officers (Officer Erica Tatum and Josue Davila), El Protector (Officer Custodio Lopez), and Recruitment Officers (Officer Edgar Vega and Officer Caleb Benefiel). One of the most important duties of a PIO is to develop community partnerships with organizations to spread our message of traffic and public safety. Through partnerships with groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), Safe Kids, and many others, our messages reach increasing numbers of children, teens, and adults. The CHP also partners with our allied law enforcement agencies through campaigns like AVOID to enhance public safety both on the freeways and within our communities. Our Recruitment Officers are working tirelessly within the community, to provide more information about exciting careers with the California Highway Patrol. In addition to the Public Information Unit, each CHP Area Office within Golden Gate Division also has a Public Information Officer to conduct media interviews, compose press releases, coordinate community outreach events, manage Area-specific social media accounts, and conduct traffic safety programs.
