The topography of the San Andreas Area varies greatly. The west end of Calaveras County is a foothill environment comprised of cattle ranches, several reservoirs/lakes and small towns. As the highways traverse east, toward the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the elevation rises sharply from 300 feet to over 8,200 feet. As a result, the area attracts many outdoor enthusiasts to the ski slopes and to enjoy recreation in the snow. The region’s many lakes and surrounding areas also provide for great fishing and hunting opportunities, as well as thousands of miles of hiking trails to enjoy the great outdoors.
There are roughly 2,000 square miles of land area and approximately 900 miles of state highway and county roads. State Routes 4, 12, 26 and 49 traverse the area and roadways consist of two lanes with few passing lanes or turnouts.
