Public Information Unit

Border Division’s Public Information Unit (PIU) coordinates the Division’s community outreach and media relations activities. The PIU provides information and education in cooperation with our region’s media partners, including newspapers, magazines, radio and television programs, and other news organizations. The PIU also maintains social media accounts to interact directly with members of the public, including Twitter and Facebook.

Our outreach efforts are coordinated through a special team of Public Information Officers (PIOs). The PIO is the public face of each CHP office, and is responsible for many duties, including providing information to the media and public, as well as educating the public through our many outreach programs.

One of the most important duties of a PIO is to develop community partnerships with organizations, schools and special programs to spread our message of traffic and public safety. Through partnerships with groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), Safe Kids, and many others, our messages reach increasing numbers of both children and adults. The CHP also partners with our allied law enforcement agencies to enhance public safety both on the freeways and in our local communities.
