The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Valley Division is proud to serve the greater Sacramento and surrounding areas. Valley Division oversees a total of 20 commands, one commercial vehicle enforcement facility, and three communications centers that encompass ten different counties within the State of California. The footprint of the Division spans from Chico on the northern end to Tracy on the southern border including South Lake Tahoe to the east and Woodland on the west fringes. These areas represent much of the diverse geography and climate for which California is so well-known. This includes cold weather mountainous regions to the heat of the valley.

Additionally, Valley Division encompasses the world-wide tourist destination of Lake Tahoe to the farmlands that service the state, country, and many parts of the world. Valley Division has a large geographic footprint which covers four major highways, including Interstate 5, Interstate 80, US 50, and State Route 99. Interstate 5 is the primary route through the Sacramento Valley, traveling north-south along the western edge of the valley. Interstate 80 cuts a swath through the valley, mostly through Placer, Sacramento, and Yolo Counties which includes Interstate 505 and State Route 113. Other principal routes in the region include State Route 99, which runs along the eastern edge of the valley, roughly parallel to Interstate 5; State Route 20, which traverses the valley from west to east on its route from State Route 1 to the Donner Pass; State Route 49, named in honor of the California Gold Rush and running through many old mining towns in the foothills of the valley; and State Route 45, which runs along the course of the Sacramento River roughly ten miles east of Interstate 5.

The primary mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of safety, service, and security to the people of California. This is accomplished by focusing on enforcement of the California Vehicle Code, particularly in areas of speed, safety belt/child restraints, driving under the influence and distracted driving. In addition to enforcement, officers provide security for state properties; focus on congestion relief, assist allied agencies and educate the motoring public on traffic safety. Our four communication centers house our Public Safety Dispatchers who are the vital link in answering “911” calls and dispatching for the officers within the entire Valley Division footprint. Within the Sacramento Region, Valley Division is accompanied by CHP personnel at the State Capitol, CHP Headquarters, and the CHP Academy. Valley Division in itself has a multitude of specialized programs, which include but are not limited to, K-9 Program, Air Operations, Bicycle Patrol, Commercial Enforcement, Safety Services Program, and Salvaged Vehicle Identification.

Also, Valley Division has specialized task forces assigned throughout the Division, including the Sacramento County Auto Theft Task Force and the Delta Regional Auto Theft Task Force. Both assist in the prevention of crime and recovery of stolen vehicles within the Valley Division jurisdiction. The CHP is committed to being a recognized leader in law enforcement and emergency incident management that provides indispensable service to the public. Valley Division staff stand ready to provide the highest quality service and answer any questions. For Area specific related questions, please click on the local CHP Area office page.
