Altadena is an unincorporated community of Los Angeles County, nestled within the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.  It is bordered to the north by the Angeles National Forest and to the south by the city of Pasadena.  In fact, the name Altadena derives from the Spanish alta, meaning "upper," and dena, from Pasadena, meaning "valley."  The Altadena Area office is located minutes from the Rose Bowl Stadium, which hosts the annual Rose Bowl Game and is a National Historic Landmark and a California Historic Civil Engineering landmark.  The Altadena Area office participates annually in both the Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl Game by providing escorts, traffic control and security.  Another prominent point of interest in Altadena is Christmas Tree Lane, which has been a holiday attraction since 1920 and boasts the oldest large-scale outdoor Christmas lighting venue in the world.

The Altadena Area office is responsible for patrolling approximately 400 square miles, including the unincorporated communities of Altadena, La Crescenta, Chapman Woods and Pasadena.  Our officers also patrol State Route 134 and State Route 710, along with portions of Interstate 210, Interstate 5, State Route 118, and State Route 2 which includes the Glendale Freeway, Angeles Forest Highway and Angeles Crest Highway.  Notably, Angeles Crest Highway is one of the most scenic drives in California, covering 62 iconic miles through the San Gabriel Mountains from La Cañada – Flintridge to State Highway 138 east of Wrightwood.

The Altadena Area is comprised of a diverse workforce with approximately 85 uniformed and civilian members.  Each of our employees helps us take a proactive role to promote the priorities of the department and improve traffic safety within our area of responsibility.  Our outreach and educational programs such as: Every 15 minutes, Sober Grad, Impact Teen Drivers, Right Turn, Start Smart, Age Well Drive Smart, and pedestrian and bicycle safety programs help us provide the highest level of safety, service, and security to the community.  We also have an active Explorer Post for community members aged 15 - 21 interested in exploring a career in law enforcement and providing community service throughout the area.  Additionally, we are proud of our Senior Volunteer Program which consists of community members aged 55 and over, looking to give back to their community in an engaging and rewarding way.

COMMANDER'S MESSAGE

Captain Hernandez was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. Following his graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he proudly served his country. During his military service, Captain Hernandez was introduced to a Marine Corps reservist who also served as a CHP officer. That interaction sparked his interest in a career dedicated to public service and law enforcement. Upon completing his military service in 2009, Captain Hernandez entered the CHP Academy several months later.

Captain Hernandez graduated from the CHP Academy in 2010 and began his CHP career at the Moorpark Area, where he primarily worked graveyard patrol and developed a strong foundation in traffic enforcement, collision investigation, and impaired driver apprehension. In 2013, he transferred to the West Valley Area, serving as a patrol officer while also assuming responsibility for reviewing the Area’s traffic collision investigations.

In 2019, Captain Hernandez promoted to Sergeant and was assigned to the East Los Angeles Area. There, he supervised the graveyard shift and later served as the Area Administrative Sergeant. During his tenure as a sergeant, he was also selected to serve as an Impaired Driver Task Force Supervisor and as an investigator with the Southern Division Critical Incident Investigation Team, participating in complex and high-profile investigations throughout Los Angeles County.

In 2021, Captain Hernandez transferred to the Antelope Valley Area, where he continued serving as a field supervisor until promoting to Lieutenant in 2023. As a lieutenant, he was assigned to the Central Los Angeles Area and also served as a Team Leader for the Southern Division Critical Incident Investigation Team, overseeing critical incident investigations. In 2024, he transferred to the West Valley Area before being selected to serve at Southern Division Headquarters as the Executive Assistant to the Chief.

In July 2026, Captain Hernandez promoted to Captain and assumed command of the Altadena Area. As the Area Commander, he is committed to fostering a culture of professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement while supporting the men and women who serve the community each day.  He believes effective leadership begins with taking care of people, and that traffic safety is a shared responsibility achieved through education, enforcement, and strong community partnerships. Under his leadership, the Altadena Area remains committed to the CHP’s mission of providing the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security.  Captain Hernandez also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration, further strengthening his commitment to professional development and public service.
