On behalf of the dedicated men and women of the Central Los Angeles Area of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), I would like to welcome you to our webpage.  The Central Los Angeles Area, under the command of Captain Martin Geller, is comprised of a diverse workforce with approximately 125 uniformed and civilian members.  Each of our employees are dedicated to providing the highest level of safety, service, and security to our residents, businesses, and visitors, ensuring the Central Los Angeles Area is the safest place to live, work, and travel.

In 1969, the CHP Central Los Angeles Area was inaugurated with the purpose of providing the highest level of safety, service, and security to the people of California.  Since then, Los Angeles has grown exponentially.  Presently, Los Angeles has a population of approximately four million with over eight million registered vehicles.  An assortment of skyscrapers associated with large multinational corporations have been erected creating a unique skyline symbolic of downtown Los Angeles which is known worldwide.  The downtown area features landmarks such as the 1781 birthplace of Los Angeles “El Pueblo de Los Angeles”, Little Tokyo, Chinatown, Arts District, Fashion District, Financial District, Jewelry District, as well as numerous concert venues and sports facilities.  A variety of museums, cutting-edge restaurants, public art, and retail stores are all within walking distance generating an exceptional opportunity for sightseeing, gastronomy, shopping, and entertainment attracting worldwide tourism in addition to residents from throughout the greater Los Angeles area all year long.  Sports fans can catch the court-pounding action of the Lakers and the Clippers, or the puck-smashing Kings at the Cypto.com Arena.  Football fans can see exciting University of Southern California Trojan Football at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum or enjoy a Los Angeles Football Club MLS soccer game at the new state of the art BMO Stadium.  The Peacock Theater, Hollywood Bowl, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Pantages Theatre, and the Greek Theatre, all host world famous musical concerts and performing arts events.  Meanwhile, Dodger Stadium is just a short drive north for nine innings of MLB baseball and Dodger dogs.

CHP Central Los Angeles Area employees carry a substantial amount of responsibility working diligently 24/7 to ensure a safe environment for the movement of people and goods traveling into and out of the downtown Los Angeles Area.  Our uniformed staff patrols 52 miles of freeways including the East Los Angeles Interchange (Eugene A. Obregon Memorial Interchange) considered the busiest freeway interchange in the world where four numbered routes converge: Interstate 5 (Golden State Freeway/Santa Ana Freeway, I-5), Interstate 10 (San Bernardino Freeway/Santa Monica Freeway, I-10), United States Route 101 (Hollywood Freeway/Santa Ana Freeway, US-101), and State Route 60 (Pomona Freeway, SR-60).  The southbound portion alone handles over 550,000 vehicles per day.   Further North, our officers also patrol the iconic concrete landmark, the Four-Level Freeway Interchange, merging US-101 and State Route 110 (Pasadena Freeway, SR-110).  Central Los Angeles CHP personnel also patrol State Route 2 (Glendale Freeway, SR-2), and Interstate 110 (Harbor Freeway, I-110).

Central Los Angeles Area personnel take pride in providing law enforcement services to numerous state properties and state agencies.  We rely on our strong working relationships with allied law enforcement agencies in the area to enforce the law, preserve the peace, and protect the innocent from victimization.  Working closely with such agencies benefits the local communities, developing effective communication techniques, and coordinate expedited response to calls for service to establish joint emergency incident handling procedures.

Central Los Angeles personnel are committed to conveying the message of driving safely every time a motorist gets behind the wheel by enforcing the law and providing safety educational program presentations to prevent injuries and the loss of life in traffic related accidents.  Programs such as: Start Smart (a program for teen drivers and parents), Every 15 Minutes and Right Turn, (programs to raise awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving to middle school and high school students), KEYS (a program for senior drivers), Designated Driver Program (to encourage one individual to abstain from consuming alcoholic beverages so they can be responsible for transporting other members of the group safely), Child Passenger Safety Program, El Protector (an educational program for the Spanish speaking community), and raising awareness about the dangers of driving distracted.  The Area is proactive in seeking and removing impaired drivers before they can cause a devastating consequence.  With each educational presentation or enforcement stop we reduce the chances of you, or a loved one being involved in a crash.  While the exact number of lives we save and the true extent of the pain we prevent can never be known, you can rest assured, we will continue our efforts 24/7.

Central Los Angeles Area personnel take great pride in the communities we serve and represent.  We welcome your questions, comments, or concerns.  You can contact us by calling the Central Los Angeles Area office at (213) 815-2000.

COMMANDER'S MESSAGE

Central Los Angeles Area Commander, Captain Martin Geller, graduated from the CHP Academy in 2006 and has spent his entire career in Southern Division, working various patrol and specialized assignments throughout the greater Los Angeles area.  His past assignments include West Valley Area, Southern Division Investigative Services Unit (ISU), Antelope Valley Area, and Central Los Angeles Area.

As an officer, Captain Geller was a member of the California Urban Communities Collaborative, a joint task force working alongside the Los Angeles Police Department, responsible for addressing violent crime in the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles.  This collaboration resulted in a reduction of Part 1 violent crime by over 10%.  In 2015, Captain Geller was assigned as an investigator within Southern Division ISU working both as a lead and assisting investigator in numerous high-profile investigations, including murder, attempted murder, criminal officer-involved shootings, sexual assaults, and theft investigations.  While assigned to ISU, Captain Geller was also responsible for planning and serving high-risk search and arrest warrants as a member of Southern Division’s Warrant Service Team.  Captain Geller was also the recipient of a Commissioner’s Commendation for saving the life of a young woman at the scene of a Metrolink train crash in Chatsworth, California.

In 2019, Captain Geller promoted to the rank of sergeant at the Antelope Valley Area, serving as both a field and administrative supervisor.  In 2021, Captain Geller returned to Southern Division ISU as the Organized Retail Crime Task Force (ORCTF) supervisor overseeing numerous investigations throughout Southern California.  Under his supervision, Southern Division ORCTF was honored with the “Case of the Year” award from the California Organized Retail Crime Association for the investigation of a multi-state retail theft crime ring.  As part of his duties, Captain Geller also served as a team leader for Southern Division’s Warrant Service Team and was assigned as an administrative investigator on Southern Division’s Critical Incident Investigation Team (CIIT).

In 2022, Captain Geller promoted to the rank of lieutenant at the Central Los Angeles Area where he served as both the Field Operations and Executive Officer.  In 2024, Captain Geller transferred to the West Valley Area where he also served as the Field Operations Officer and the Executive Officer.  While assigned to the West Valley Area, Captain Geller coordinated both the initial response and the recovery efforts for the devastating 2025 Palisades Fire.

In March 2026, Captain Geller was promoted to the rank of captain and selected to become the commander of Central Los Angeles Area. Captain Geller also serves as a captain on Southern Division’s Special Response Team (SRT) where he previously served as both an Executive Officer and team member.  Captain Geller also serves as an associate member on the Department’s statewide SRT training cadre where he trains both CHP and allied law enforcement agency personnel in response protocols to civil unrest.

Captain Geller is committed to providing the highest level of safety, service and security to residents and visitors of this historic area of Los Angeles.
