OAKLAND SURGE EFFORT MAKES SIGNIFICANT IMPACT

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In a continued effort to support the city of Oakland and the East Bay, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers conducted an unannounced “surge” operation holding criminals accountable, impounding vehicles, and taking weapons off the streets.

On Saturday, October 19, 2024, the CHP conducted an unannounced surge operation with incredible results.  As was announced by Governor Newsom, the increase in personnel assigned to the enforcement effort further improves the results of the CHP’s presence.  The enforcement effort included over 60 personnel with support from aerial resources.  In summary, the one-day operation in conjunction with Oakland area patrol operations personnel yielded:

  • 22 arrests; five of those for suspected felony crimes
  • 21 vehicles impounded
  • 16 stolen vehicles recovered, one of which was occupied by the suspect
  • 4 firearms were recovered, of which 3 were unserialized “ghost” guns
  • 3 pursuits by CHP personnel

Throughout the operation, CHP personnel responded to multiple reports of sideshows. Enforcement contacts resulting from sideshow activity resulted in five arrests. The CHP wants to remind the public of the dangers of sideshow activity for not only the participants but also other motorists and bystanders.

“The CHP’s commitment to the safety of the people of Oakland and the East Bay remains unwavering,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee.  “The dedicated efforts of our CHP personnel fighting crime and enhancing public safety reflect our ongoing mission to protect the community and ensure criminals are held accountable.”

The CHP will continue to conduct unannounced surge operations focused on protecting the community and making the streets safer.
