#ICYMI:  A roundup of the most notable incidents involving the CHP this week, including notable arrests, retail theft, cadet graduation, holiday enforcement, and e-bike training.

1.    $190,000 IN STOLEN RETAIL MERCHANDISE RECOVERED IN EL SOBRANTE

Investigators assigned to the CHP’s Golden Gate Division Organized Retail Crime Task Force recovered nearly $200,000 in stolen retail merchandise at a residence in El Sobrante, Calif., leading to the arrest of a 52-year-old East Bay resident.

 

2.    ARREST MADE IN OAKLAND FREEWAY SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

Detectives assigned to the CHP’s Golden Gate Division Special Investigations Unit, with the assistance of the GGD Canine Unit and CHP Oakland Area, arrested a suspect in connection with a June 2023 freeway shooting in Oakland.  The 57-year-old Oakley, Calif. resident was booked on charges of attempted murder, shooting at a vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon, and carrying a concealed firearm.

 

3.    112 NEW CHP OFFICERS SWORN IN DURING GRADUATION CEREMONY

The CHP announced the swearing in of more than 100 new officers, which took place during a graduation ceremony on Friday, September 1.  The ceremony marked the completion of 26 weeks of intense training at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento, Calif.

 

4.    CHP INCREASED ENFORCEMENT ACHIEVES POSITIVE RESULTS OVER LABOR DAY WEEKEND

CHP officers were busy keeping California’s roadways safe throughout the recent holiday weekend.  Results from the Labor Day Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) yielded more than 13,000 citations for speeding and 1,064 arrests for driving under the influence.  The number of fatal crashes and victims killed within CHP jurisdiction decreased 44 percent from the same period in 2022.

 

5.    CHP ‘ROLLS’ OUT STATEWIDE SAFETY TRAINING PROGRAM FOR ELECTRIC BICYCLES

The CHP closed out the month of August by releasing its new online e-bike safety and training program.  The CHP’s program is designed to help e-bike riders of all abilities and all ages identify potential hazards, while offering information on safe riding practices and hazard-avoidance maneuvers.
