On behalf of the dedicated men and women of the Central Los Angeles Area of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), I’d like to welcome you to our webpage.  The Central Los Angeles Area, under the command of Captain Jared Perry, is comprised of a diverse workforce with approximately 142 uniformed and civilian members.  Each of our employees are dedicated in providing the highest level of safety, service, and security to our residents, businesses, and visitors, ensuring Central Los Angeles is the safest place to live, work, and travel.  Arguably one of the busiest CHP commands in the state, the members of the Area take great pride in the communities they serve and represent.


In 1969, the CHP Central Los Angeles Area was inaugurated with the purpose of providing the highest level of safety, service, and security to the people of California.  Since then, Los Angeles has grown exponentially.  Presently, Los Angeles has a population of approximately four million with over eight million registered vehicles.  An assortment of skyscrapers associated with large multinational corporations have been erected creating a unique skyline symbolic of downtown Los Angeles known worldwide.  The downtown area features landmarks such as “El Pueblo de Los Angeles,” the city’s 1781 birthplace, Little Tokyo, Chinatown, Arts District, Fashion District, Financial District, Jewelry District, concert venues, and sports facilities.  A variety of museums, cutting-edge restaurants, public art, and retail stores are all within walking distance generating an exceptional opportunity for sightseeing, gastronomy, shopping, and entertainment attracting worldwide tourism as well as residents from throughout the region all year long.  Sports fans can catch the court-pounding action of the Lakers and/or Clippers, or the puck-smashing Kings at the Cypto.com Arena.  Football fans can see exciting USC Trojan Football at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum or enjoy a Los Angeles Football Club MLS soccer game at the new state of the art Banc of California Stadium.  The Microsoft Theater, Hollywood Bowl, Disney Hall, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Greek Theater host world famous musical concerts and performing arts events.  Meanwhile, Dodger Stadium is just a short drive north for nine innings of MLB baseball and Dodger dogs.


CHP Central Los Angeles Area employees carry a substantial amount of responsibility working diligently 24/7 to ensure a safe environment for the movement of people and goods traveling in and out of the downtown Los Angeles Area.  Our uniformed staff patrols 52 miles of freeways including the East Los Angeles Interchange (Eugene A. Obregon Memorial Interchange) considered the busiest freeway interchange in the world.  The southern portion alone handles over 550,000 vehicles per day.  Four numbered routes converge at the interchange: Interstate 5 (I-5), I-10, U.S. Route 101 (US-101), and State Route 60 (SR-60).  Central Los Angeles is the meeting place of four separate highways: I-5 (Golden State Freeway/Santa Ana Freeway), I-10 (San Bernardino Freeway/Santa Monica Freeway), SR-60 East (Pomona Freeway), and US-101 (Santa Ana Freeway).  Further North, our officers also patrol the iconic concrete landmark “Four-Level Freeway Interchange” merging the US 101 and SR-110 (Pasadena Freeway).  Central Los Angeles CHP personnel also patrol the SR-2, Glendale Freeway and I-110, Harbor Freeway. 


We take pride in providing law enforcement services to numerous state properties and state agencies.  We rely on our strong working relationships with allied law enforcement agencies in the area to enforce the law, preserve the peace, and protect the innocent from victimization.  Working closely with such agencies benefits the local communities, developing effective communication techniques, and coordinate expedited response to calls for service to establish joint emergency incident handling procedures. 


Central Los Angeles Area personnel are committed to conveying the message of driving safely every time a motorist gets behind the wheel by enforcing the law and providing safety educational program presentations to prevent injuries and the loss of life in traffic related accidents.  Programs such as: Start Smart (a program for teen drivers and parents), Every 15 Minutes and Right Turn, (programs to raise awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving to middle school and high school students), KEYS (a program for senior drivers), Designated Driver Program (to encourage one individual to abstain from consuming alcoholic beverages for an outing so that they can be responsible for transporting other members of the group safely), Child Passenger Safety Program, El Protector Program (educational presentations for the Spanish speaking community) and raising awareness about the dangers of driving distracted.  The Area is proactive in seeking and removing impaired drivers before they can cause a devastating consequence.  With each educational presentation and with every enforcement stop we make, we are reducing the chances of you or a loved one being involved in a collision.  While the exact number of lives we save and the true extent of the pain we prevent can never be known, you can rest assured, we will continue our efforts 24/7.

COMMANDER'S MESSAGE

Suarez Captain

Captain Jared Perry was born and raised in Paso Robles, CA, where he graduated from Paso Robles High School. From childhood, Captain Perry dreamed of becoming an officer with the California Highway Patrol (CHP). After high school, he attended California Lutheran University (CLU) in Thousand Oaks, CA, where he majored in English. Captain Perry served as an Explorer at the CHP Ventura Area during college. At 21 years old, Captain Perry aged out of the Explorer program; however, he stayed involved as a civilian advisor. The CHP Explorer Program still holds a special place in Captain Perry’s heart. Captain Perry’s CHP Academy start date was two weeks before his CLU graduation date. Excited for the opportunity, Captain Perry advised his CLU professors of his upcoming CHP Academy start date. They graciously allowed him to complete his graduation requirements before reporting to the CHP Academy.

In 2005, Captain Perry began his CHP career as a cadet. Upon graduation, he promoted to Officer and was assigned to Redwood City Area. Captain Perry enjoyed working in this diverse area while learning the fundamentals of becoming an officer. In 2007, Captain Perry transferred to Ventura Area, where he previously served as an Explorer. Captain Perry enjoyed patrolling the Pacific Coast Highway and the unincorporated areas of Ventura County. Captain Perry became an Explorer Advisor during his tenure at the Ventura Area. He took pride in mentoring youth toward a career in law enforcement. In 2009, he transferred to the Southern Division Training Unit, managing ongoing training requirements for CHP personnel in Los Angeles County. In 2010, Captain Perry graduated from Tiffin University, earning a Master of Science in Justice Administration.

In 2013, Captain Perry promoted to Sergeant and was assigned to the Office of Internal Affairs (OIA). During which, Captain Perry was a member of the Public Safety Officer’s Procedural Bill of Rights instructor cadre and instructed CHP supervisors and managers across the state. In 2014, Captain Perry transferred to Central Los Angeles Area. Captain Perry embraced the high-paced environment, the diverse communities, and mentoring young officers. In 2016, Captain Perry received a Commissioner’s Commendation for saving the life of a suicidal person dangling over an overpass.

In 2017, Captain Perry promoted to Lieutenant and was assigned to Westminster Area. He enjoyed working in Orange County and learning more about the cities and communities within the area. In 2018, Captain Perry transferred back to Central Los Angeles Area, serving as the Field Operations Officer and Executive Officer. In 2020, Lieutenant Perry transferred to West Valley Area. Captain Perry served as a Team Leader for the Southern Division Critical Incident Investigation Team as a lieutenant, managing high-profile investigations. Additionally, Captain Perry was a Southern Division Special Response Team member responsible for planning and deploying multiple large-scale responses.

In January 2023, Captain Perry promoted to the rank of Captain and was selected as the Central Los Angeles Area commander. At the center of one of the largest cities in the world, Central Los Angeles Area encompasses a variety of diverse communities such as Little Tokyo, Chinatown, Olvera Street, Arts District, Fashion District, Financial District, Jewelry District, concert venues, the University of Southern California campus, and professional sporting event stadiums. Captain Perry feels blessed to have served the Central Los Angeles Area at three ranks. Captain Perry is honored to serve those living in, working at, and traveling to Downtown Los Angeles.
