The California Highway Patrol- Mariposa Area is proud to serve Mariposa County with the indispensable Safety, Service and Security that the CHP is known for. As part of CHP’s Central Division, our office patrols State Route 140, State Route 49 and approximately 560 miles of county roads. Mariposa is situated adjacent to Yosemite National Park, which attracts over 4 million visitors per year. State Route 140 is the lowest elevation entrance into Yosemite National Park which makes it the only “All Season” access to the Park. Mariposa is proud of its rich history, playing an integral part in the Gold Rush of 1849. The Mariposa Area CHP serves a diverse geographic area ranging from the eastern San Joaquin Valley (elev. 170’) to the western portion of the Sierra Nevada Mountains (elev. over 5000’).
Message from the Commander: “Here in Mariposa, our proximity to Yosemite National Park, coupled with local historic attractions, result in our receiving visitors from all over the world. We take pride in our role as ambassadors of the Department. We know we may be the only contact with the CHP that our visitors ever have, and we want to make a good impression. In addition, we take the protection of our community seriously. With those thoughts in mind, we strive to provide the best possible public service through proactive patrol, a robust public service campaign, and community partnerships.”
