The California Highway Patrol Winterhaven Area is located in the Imperial County at the southeast corner of the State. The CHP Office is located on Interstate 8 approximately 8 miles west of the Arizona State line. As part of the CHP’s Border Division, our office patrols Interstate 8 from Highway 98 east to the Arizona State line, Highway 78 from Ogilby Rd. east to the Riverside County line, SR-186 from Interstate 8 south to the international border with Mexico as well as 400 miles of unincorporated county roadways. The Area provides safety, service and security to residents, commuters and tourists traveling between San Diego and Phoenix, AZ. Winterhaven Area has vast recreational areas, primarily the Imperial Sand Dunes and the Colorado River which are a major destination on weekends and holidays. Winterhaven is bordered to the east by Yuma, AZ across the Colorado River with a population of over 90,000 in the summer and rises to over 180,000 during the winter months.
