About Us

Welcome to Northern Division. The CHP’s Northern Division boundaries encompass the 13 northern most California counties. From the rugged coastlines to the west, to the Oregon and Nevada borders, Northern California boasts many of the world’s natural wonders. These include dozens of national and state parks, wild life refuges, fish hatcheries, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, forests, mountains. Residents and visitors alike enjoy on- and off-road biking, fishing, boating, camping, hiking, picnicking, water and snow skiing, and photography ~ just to name a few popular activities. Northern California also leads the nation in the production of more than 30 commodities, including peaches, eggs, walnuts, strawberries and rice. Northern Division has it all. Within this geographical area of 39,929 square miles are 36,000 miles of roadway; 20,715 of these miles are subject to CHP patrol, representing 21.2 percent of the total statewide CHP patrolled miles.

The Northern Division headquarters, located in Redding, is responsible for administering all CHP operations in this region: including 15 Area Offices, 11 Resident Posts, and two commercial vehicle enforcement facilities, providing road patrol and emergency response 24-hours-a-day, 7-days a week. Northern Division is staffed by approximately 535 uniformed employees and 180 non-uniformed employees.

The men and women of Northern Division live and work in these communities, are aware of the qualities and needs of each, and strive to provide the highest level of safety, service, and security.

The Northern Division headquarters staff is divided into separate units for the management of numerous departmental programs. These units include Field Support, Air Operations, Commercial Enforcement, Motor Carrier Safety, Investigative Services and the Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT).

Northern California has extremely diverse terrain and types of roadways. Whether your drive is short or lengthy, remember to be prepared as weather and traffic conditions can change rapidly. Most importantly, I ask each of you to please be vigilant and drive safely while enjoying the North State. Observing the laws of the road will help prevent collisions, and the injuries and deaths they cause, so that we all arrive safely at your destinations: Drive the speed limit, drive sober, wear your seatbelt, and limit distractions while driving.
