The mission of the California Highway Patrol is to provide the highest level of safety, service, and security to the people of California. Our purpose at the San Francisco Area office is to carry out this mission on behalf of all those using the freeways and state highways in our area. CHP duties include preventing the loss of life, personal injury, and property damage; managing traffic and emergency incidents; and protecting public and state assets.
As part of the CHP's Golden Gate Division, the San Francisco Area's jurisdiction begins at the toll plaza at the east end of the Bay Bridge, across the bridge and through the City of San Francisco, south on the Peninsula (US 101 and I-280) to the City of Millbrae, and south on State Route 1 to Montara Beach. We are responsible for your safety on freeways and state highways that include routes SR-1, I-80, US101, I-280, and I-380.
