Nestled in the farm lands north and west of the greater Sacramento metropolitan area is the California Highway Patrol’s Woodland Area Command. Though relatively close to the greater Sacramento region, the Woodland Area Command is relatively small; and yet, responsible for patrolling more than 1,000 miles of incorporated and unincorporated interstate highways, and unincorporated roadways. Encompassing Yolo County, the 1,013 square miles is home to just over 180,000 people; the University of California, Davis; Sacramento City College, Davis Campus; the national championship AAA Baseball Sacramento River Cats; the deep water channel and Port of West Sacramento; the cities of Davis, Woodland, West Sacramento, and Winters; and the unincorporated communities of Capay, Esparto, Madison, Knights Landing, Yolo, Zamora, Dunnigan, Elkhorn, and Clarksburg. Several major interstates and highways cross through Yolo County and are patrolled by the men and women California Highway Patrol’s Woodland Area; Interstate 80, Interstate 505, Interstate 5, US Route 50, State Route 113, State Route 16, State Route 45, State Route 128, and State Route 84 (Jefferson Blvd.), in addition to more than 700 miles of undivided county roadways.
In addition to traditional enforcement and public service aimed at providing Safety, Security and Service, the Woodland Area offers our community many free traffic safety education programs. For elementary school children we conduct classroom visits focused on pedestrian, passenger and bicycle safety. For junior high children we add to that foundation with curriculum focused on the pre-teen called “Right Turn”. For high school aged students and parents we offer “Start Smart” which is an interactive all-inclusive class to raise awareness of teens and parents of the dangers teen drivers face behind the wheel in effort to improve communication and safety on the road. We also offer Impact Teen Driver program which is an impactful innovative presentation focused on the dangers of distracted driving and license requirements. The Woodland CHP partners annually with local agencies to bring the “Every 15 Minutes” program to local high schools to raise awareness surrounding the dangers of impaired driving. For adults, the CHP presents Distracted Driving, Bicycle Safety and general traffic safety presentations generally to service organizations, clubs, groups and places of business. For senior drivers the CHP offers the Age Well, Drive Smart program which is designed to help senior drivers continue to drive safely.
