The California Highway Patrol, Alturas Area is located in the heart of Modoc County. As part of Northern Division, Alturas CHP Officers patrol the county area of nearly 4,000 square miles containing a rural population of just fewer than 10,000. Our beautiful landscape is situated in the northeast corner of the State, in a high desert region along the southern Cascade Mountains and Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. We receive significant snowfall during the winter months and we are subject to some of the lowest temperatures in California. Major highways in this area are US 395, SR 299 and SR 139. We patrol over a thousand miles of county and United States Forest Service roads.
Alturas Area offers numerous educational opportunities for the community in regards to safe driving techniques, tips for driving in snow conditions, and safety awareness for new drivers facing challenges of the road. Our main focus is to prevent the loss of life, injuries, and property damage for the motoring public.
